According to Khabar Online’s political correspondent, during their phone conversation held yesterday, Iranian and Russian parliament speakers condemned the recent terrorist attacks in the Middle East and stressed on more cooperation between the countries in the region to counter such moves.
In the same vein, they agreed to consult and seek advice from each other on resolving regional problems and developing bilateral relations in various fields particularly economic and parliamentarian issues.
Unlike the West which is in a dispute with Iran over its nuclear program and has imposed full economic sanctions on Iran, Russia has said it does not approve the sanctions on Iran which go beyond the resolutions passed by the Unites Nations Security Council (UNSC).
Moscow has warned as well that any military attack to Iran aiming at stopping its atomic program would bring calamitous consequences. To avoid such scenario, Russia proposed a step-by-step approach which includes taking measures by the Islamic Republic of Iran to respond to the questions of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on its nuclear program.
Based on the plan proposed by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Iran would enter into a new phase of negotiations with the West to ease the concerns of IAEA, and instead the West would remove a part of its economic sanctions imposed on Iran on the pretext of atomic activities which Tehran maintains is meant simply for peaceful purposes.
As the head of the Russian State Duma, Sergei Naryshkin also congratulated the new Iranian year, Norouz (began on March 20) and urged improving friendly cooperation between the Russian Federation and the Islamic Republic of Iran in the new year.
Both Larijani and Naryshkin maintained that ties between the two parliaments should be heightened.
On the other hand, during the phone conversation, Larijani congratulated the appointment of Vladimir Putin as the President of the Russian Federation and wished him good luck. He also voiced full-scale support of Iran's Majlis for expanding friendly cooperation between Iran and Russia.
