Iran's Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani has reaffirmed Tehran’s resolve to help promote stability in Iraq and called on the United Nations to prevent outside powers from undermining Iraq’s national security.

“The principled policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran is to constantly help promote tranquility, security and national unity in Iraq,” IRNA quoted Larijani as saying at his Wednesday meeting with UN special envoy to Iraq Martin Kobler in the Iranian capital, Tehran.

“The UN should be an axis for the reinforcement of convergence, peace and progress in the country, and curb certain countries’ incendiarism,” he added.

The Majlis speaker voiced support for the ongoing democratic transition in Iraq and called on the UN to assume a more effective role in the process.

For his part, the UN special envoy elaborated on the measures adopted by the world body for the promotion of stability in Iraq, and noted that the UN efforts have been basically focused on enhancing convergence among different Iraqi political factions.

The UN envoy also lauded Iran's role in helping Iraq to establish peace and national unity.
