Iran has welcomed an agreement reached between Yemeni parties on a prisoner exchange, describing the move as an important humanitarian step.

In remarks on Wednesday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei expressed appreciation for Oman’s role in facilitating dialogue between the ruling Ansarullah movement and the Saudi-backed administration in Aden.

Baqaei pointed out that Muscat’s mediation was crucial in achieving the accord.

He said Iran hoped the agreement would pave the way for resolving outstanding issues, establishing peace and stability across Yemen, and safeguarding the country’s territorial integrity.

The rival Yemeni sides announced a major prisoner exchange agreement on Tuesday, including the release of around 1,700 Ansarullah detainees in exchange for 1,200 prisoners held by Sana’a.
