Iranian nationals in Sri Lanka urged to keep in touch with embassy

Iran has called on its nationals living in Sri Lanka to avoid protest scenes and keep in touch with the Iranian embassy in the capital Colombo.

Sri Lanka has witnessed sporadic protests against a worsening economic crisis since March.

New rallies resumed on Friday, turning violent in Colombo where protesters stormed President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s official residence on Saturday.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanani on Saturday called on Iranians’ living in Sri Lanka to avoid protest scenes.

He said that the ministry is constantly contacting the Iranian Embassy in Colombo as well.

Kanani expressed hope that calm returns to Sri Lanka soon and said that the basic rights of the people there should be respected.
