Tehran, Washington agree on prisoner swap: Iran FM

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said on Sunday that his country and the United States have reached an agreement on extradition of prisoners.

“If everything goes well from the American side, we will witness an exchange of prisoners in the short term,” the foreign minister said.

Noting that Iran considers the case as a completely humanitarian issue, Amirabdollahian said that a document was indirectly agreed and signed by Iran and the American side last March but the ground for its implementation was prepared now.

Everything is prepared on the Iranian side and the Americans are carrying out the latest technical coordination, he added.

On a China-brokered deal to resume relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia, the foreign minister said that the agreement would benefit the interests of both nations and the regional peace and security and does not pose a threat to any Muslim country of the region.

He said that the agreement normalizes relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia as of the publication of the tripartite statement of Tehran, Riyadh and Beijing.

The agreement also requires the foreign ministers of Iran and Saudi Arabia to meet within two months to reopen embassies in the capitals, exchange ambassadors and reopen consulates in Jeddah and Mashhad, Amirabdollahian said.

He added that in a meeting between the Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, the Chinese side proposed that his country was ready to mediate between Tehran and Riyadh which led to later talks between Iranian and Saudi officials in Beijing.

Amirabdollahian expressed hope that all the regional countries would benefit from the Iran-China deal, making it clear that this accord will not ignore the decisions of other countries and resistance forces in their fight against the Zionist threats and aggressions.
