Afghanistan refused Iranian expert visits to Helmand dams: FM

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian has said that Afghanistan has refused to allow visits by Iranian experts to dams built on Helmand River.

In a tweet posted in Farsi on Friday, Amirabdollahian said that that he has repeatedly called on acting Foreign Minister of Afghanistan's Taliban Amir Khan Muttaqi over the past months to let Iranian experts visit the dams on the river and measure the volume of water.

Pointing out that Iran’s Sistan is suffering from drought, the Iranian foreign minister said that the criteria for the presence or absence of water is a technical visit, not a political statement.

President Ebrahim Raisi on Thursday warned the ruling Taliban group in Afghanistan that they should not ignore the water rights of people living in Iran's southeastern regions from the Hirmand (Helmand) River, stressing that the government is determined to defend the nation’s rights under a treaty signed in 1973.

Noting that Iran’s water right from the Hirmand river is a serious issue, President Raisi urged the ruling government in Afghanistan to let the Iranian experts visit dams built on Hirmand to see if there is a shortage of water as claimed by Taliban officials.
